Colour – the Joie de Vivre

The building paints manufacturer, Caparol, sponsors "Street-Art Brazil" of the Schirn Gallery

FRANKFURT. Within the scope of the guest-country presence of Brazil at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2013 the Schirn Kunsthalle art gallery is presenting for the first time in Germany the diversity of Brazilian graffiti. "Street-Art Brazil" is the name of the open-air exhibition in Frankfurt which was opened on 4th September 2013. Eleven artists and artist groups from São Paulo and other metropolises in Brazil are painting their pictures throughout the City of Frankfurt starting from the Schirn building. An app navigates the visitor on a walk through the city. Apart from expensive spray cans, the Brazilian "Grafiteiros" have always used facade paint and rollers for their work. The material for the Brazilian street art in Frankfurt comes from a traditional company in the Odenwald. The company, Caparol, is showing great confidence in supporting the project "Street-Art Brazil" with more than 300 litres of paint which the artists are turning into pure "joie de vivre". This commitment is in line with the tradition of a street-art project by Keith Haring in Pisa in which the renowned artist created his last publicly painted picture with Caparol products. Amphibolin for impressive painting results on all substrates The Caparol paint, Amphibolin, is used which is characterised by its weather resistance and high protective effect against air pollution. Due to its extraordinarily good bonding on almost any substrate, the paint is ideal for the Brazilian graffiti art on Frankfurt's facades, bridge buttresses and station floors. The artists can select the colours themselves according to their preferences and requirements from the 3D-System PLUS colour fan – from apricot through curcuma to sapphire. For a picture by the artist, Alexandre Orion, in Junghofstraße Caparol also provided "Caparol Binder" as the primer for the painting substrate. Opinion expressed in colour Since it operates throughout Europe, Caparol regards itself as responsible for the influence and cultural significance of colour in the cityscape and in interior spaces. Surveys have shown that residents feel noticeably more content in a freshly renovated, more colourful environment. "Street-Art Brazil" and its spectacular exhibition lie between the poles of colour and its influence. The tremendous variety of techniques and styles raise the Brazilian street art above the globalised graffiti culture. Figurative and abstract, humorous and socio-critical pictures are on display. The advocates of the first generation of Brazilian street artists started to edge onto the street with the paintings after the end of the military dictatorship in the mid-80s, thereby indicating the will to express public opinion. Also, the younger protagonists of the scene today deal with the current social, economic and ecological problems in their city. Against this backdrop, the commitment shown by Caparol for this project is not only just a plea for more colour in the cityscape. It is an expression of communal spirit, cultural interchange, tolerance and a feeling for life and enjoyment. More information at:
